Treatment denied

Private Hospitals reluctant to give free treatment to poor
Delhi Government constituted Monitoring Committee of which I am a member has inspected Maharaja Agarsen Hosital, Punjabi Bagh and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Karol Bagh on Saturday 10.12.2011. At the time of inspection, only six EWS patients against 38 EWS beds were admitted in Maharaja Agarsen Hospital. All these six EWS patients were referred by the Government Hospitals. The Committee advised the hospital to appoint a social worker to increase the number of patients in the I.P.D. and O.P.D under free category. In Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the Committee found that 65 EWS patients against 68 EWS beds were admitted. The Committee observed, "Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in general is doing a good job for the EWS patients and the Nodal Officer in particular is doing an excellent job. The Monitoring Committee expects that the good work is continued."

During the inspections, it has been observed that barring very few hospitals, all other hospitals are reluctant to provide free treatment to EWS patients. In one of the recent cases, a EWS patient was referred by Hindu Rao Hospital to Sunder Lal Charitable Hospital, Ashok Vihar for free treatment but the Hospital denied treatment on the pretext that the patient did not have BPL card (BPL card is not a legal requirement. What required is that the family income should not more than Rs.6422/- per month and the patient or his or her relative has to simply declare it on the declaration form required to be supplied by the Hospital. In case, a patient is referred to private hospital for free treatment by a government hospital, the government hospital gets such declaration filled up and send it to private hospital along with the patient). Sunder Lal Hospital by denying free treatment to the patient has committed contempt of the Hon’ble High Court and a petition in this regard would be filed soon by the Social Jurist, A Civil Rights Group on whose petition the High Court issued directives for providing totally free treatment to the EWS patients by all the 43 identified private hospitals to the extent of 10 IPD & 25 % OPD. There are around 800 free beds in these 43 private hospitals with state of art facilities which need to be optimally utilized for the benefit of the poor of this country.

Master Aniket is waiting for your healing touch

Ludhiana, October 18, 2011 : Master Aniket, a 11 years old boy (Unit no: C7153608) from Ludhiana presented with symptoms of chronic kidney disease stage 5. His primary diagnosis was posterior urethral value and underwent surgery at the age of 8 months. For the last 2 years, he has been on dialysis (initially hemodialysis and subsequently on peritoneal dialysis). He developed recurrent episodes of peritonitis due to which his peritoneal dialysis catheter had to be removed.
He is presently still critical. I would request all those who are able to generally contribute to his treatment without which he will not be able to sustain life. His father, Anil Kumar is working with an employer in a small shop and in view of his son’s ill-health has not gone for work for 2 months. His father has 4 children, 2 daughters and 1 more brother younger to Aniket.
Kind hearted philanthropists and well-wishers can help this poor and deserving patient by sending in their contribution to the Medical Superintendent, CMCH, by a crossed cheque in favor of “CMC Ludhiana Society” with Aniket’s name mentioned at the back of the cheque, along with a covering letter. Kindly do your best to support this family in their time of need and May God help in recovery.

keep her in ur prayers.

Please take a moment to read this.
January 16, 2011 - Jain Mandir - Buena Park, CA by Cure Sonia

My baby sister, Sonia was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), which is a cancer of the blood. She is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant. Sonia is 24 years old, and receiving excellent care at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Her diagnosis caught us all by surprise and we need to act very quickly to find a bone marrow match.
Sonia is currently undergoing intense chemotherapy but requires a bone marrow transplant quickly to survive beyond the next few months. Increasing the number of South Asians registered as potential bone marrow donors will help Sonia and will benefit our whole community since there are currently not enough South Asians registered as donors.

I am grateful to all those who have already reached out to help. There are some key things you can do right away -- time is of the essence.

1. Please get registered immediately.

Getting registered is quick and requires a simple, non-invasive cheek swab (2 minutes of your time) and filling out some forms (5 minutes of your time). Registering is VERY simple and does not require a blood test!

Bone marrow drives are being organized all over the United States. The fastest way to get registered is to attend one of the drives. For a list of all the upcoming drives, click on the Events tab or click on the following link:

2. Spread the word.
Please share this page with all your friends, particularly South Asians, and ask them to do the same. Please use the power of your address book, the web, and social networking to spread this message – today more than ever before, we can achieve a broad scale effort and be part of a large online movement to save lives. We need to get the word out quickly. Saving Sonia is about numbers and odds.

Post the following message on your Facebook wall: Please help Sonia Rai win her fight against leukemia! Visit www.curesonia.org to join the movement!

Promote local drives within your network - we need people to attend and get registered in person. Local drive information will always be up-to-date at www.curesonia.org.

3. Organize a drive.

If you can, sponsor a drive at your company or in your community. Drives need to take place in the next 1-2 weeks to be of help to Sonia. Hosting a drive can be as simple as setting up a table at an existing event...so it doesn't have to be very time consuming to plan. Please contact rahul@rkpromotions.com for more info.
